Wikia
Wikia is a project with the aim of creating freely hosted wiki communities that was founded by Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley in October 2004.
Wikia is run by Wikia, Inc., the company who have hosted Memory Alpha, a large Star Trek wiki since February 2005, and Uncyclopedia, a parody site, since May 2005. In October 2005, Kennisnet launched the first of their Wikia-hosted Dutch educational wikis. The company re-incorporated in Delaware in January 2006 after raising a $4 million Series A round from Bessemer Venture Partners, Omidyar Network and its angel investors, including Marc Andreessen, Dan Gillmor, Reid Hoffman, Josh Kopelman, Joichi Ito, Mitch Kapor, Brett Bullington, Ron Conway, Gil Penchina, Michael Tanne, and Dave Whorton. Gil Penchina became Wikia's CEO in June 2006, at the same time the company moved its headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Menlo Park in California.
